My white starfish mirror starts with a 18" square, slightly distressed solid wood frame.  I carefully add dozens of sun-bleached natural white finger starfish in a freeform way, taking care to join just the points and build up it's depth.

The starfish extend beyond the 18x18 edges to about 22" square, with 2 sawtooth hangers for strength.  This is flexible if you are working with a cramped space.
